About the Organisation

The Aga Khan Education Service in Uganda was established in the early 1930s in 20 villages and towns, including Masaka, Mbale, Jinja and Mbarara.
Currently, AKES in Uganda runs co-educational day schools located in central Kampala and attended by over 30 nationalities at Nursery, Primary and Secondary levels.

Over the years the institutions of AKES in Uganda have come to be recognised as spaces for inquiry, development, learning and quality education from the nursery to secondary level. A total student population of over 2000 children are taught by 150 full-time teaching staff, who are supported by part-time and volunteer educators.

The Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) is one of the largest private, not-for-profit, non-denominational educational networks in the developing world. AKES, U operates schools from Pre-School to High School and offers the British National Curriculum (BNC), International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and the Uganda National Primary and Secondary curriculum.

Job Description

Job Title:   Special Support Teacher (English & Social Studies)

The Special Support teacher (English and Social Studies) will be responsible for supporting a group of English Language Learners in improving their English Language skills as well as learning the UNEB primary-level Social Studies curriculum.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

  • Review diagnostic, student work and teacher reports to determine where each learner stands with respect to their English Language proficiency.

  • Develop tailored termly schemes of work, weekly/monthly planners, worksheets and other learning material, as well as learning plans for each session. Use the domains of language learning and of reading to guide this planning.

  • Support identified students in-class and with pull-out sessions to enhance proficiency in English to enable them to competently work with the UNEB curriculum with their class.

  • Where appropriate, use e-learning tools to enhance reading and English Language skills, after approval from the Head-teacher and CEO.

  • Provide dedicates sessions to small group of students to help them learn the Social Studies curriculum to their year-level, covering any prior year gaps.

  • Monitor each child’s progress on a daily basis and submit an individual student progress report on a weekly basis to the Head-teacher and CEO. (Evaluating the progress of individual learners on a weekly basis to measure progress, identify barriers to learning and recommend action to overcome barriers.)

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

  • A minimum of a University Bachelor’s degree in Education (with a specialization in English/Humanities or Social studies)

  • At least five years’ experience teaching English in either national or international curriculum.

  • Empathetic, compassionate teacher who is patient with English Language Learners and is able to guide children in their learning.

  • Ability to work individually and with small groups of learners.

  • Willingness to take direction and learn new ways of teaching learners.

  • Previous experience as an ESL teacher is a plus.

  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills
