About the Organisation
The Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education (UNITE) was created on 5th July 2024 by Statutory Instrument No. 53 of 2024, under the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act (UOTIA), Cap. 262, as an Other Degree Awarding Institution (ODAI). UNITE is a multi-campus institution with campuses in Kabale, Kaliro, Mubende, Muni, and Unyama, and its headquarters located in Kira Municipality (former Shimoni Core PTC). The institute is fully accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

Job Description
Job Title: Senior Legal Officer
Organisation: Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education (UNITE)
Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Provides legal services to the Institute including drafting of agreements, contracts, registration and protection of intellectual property, memoranda and other legal documents.
Analyses, critiques and proffers legal opinion on administrative and policy decisions on matters of law.
Liaises with various institutions on any legal matters including representation in Courts of Law.
Conducts due diligence on firms intending to carry out major projects for supply of goods or services to the Institute.
Plans, prepares and executes the budgets of the Unit.
Reports on the activities and performance of the legal teams.
Interprets laws and other statutory instruments relating to the Institute.
Conducts legal research and drafts legal submissions and legal briefs to facilitate the defense team in court proceedings.
Supervises, mentors and appraises staff of the Unit.
Key Result Areas
Legal services to the Institute provided.
Legal opinion on administrative and policy decisions on matters of law tendered.
Support for networking with various institutions on legal matters affecting the Institute provided.
Due diligence for major projects or undertakings done.
Support in planning, preparing and executing the Unit budgets tendered.
Performance of the legal teams constituted in the Unit reported.
Laws and other statutory instruments relating to the Institute interpreted.
Legal research conducted, submissions drafted and legal briefs prepared.
Staff of the unit supervised, monitored and appraised.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
An Honours Bachelor’s degree in Law from a recognized institution.
A Post graduate Diploma in legal practice from Law Development Centre or other recognized institution.
Should be an enrolled advocate of the High Court with a valid practicing certificate.
Working experience
Ten (10) years of legal practice.
