Job Description
The incumbent will teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English Language Teaching, participate in curriculum and programme development, conduct and publish high-quality research, and integrate community engagement into academic activities. The role involves supervising postgraduate students, participating in academic committees, contributing to quality assurance processes, and mentoring junior staff. The ideal candidate must have a solid track record of research output, student supervision, and contributions to the broader academic and professional community.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
Develop and compile course materials and work schemes
Prepare professional teaching resources and integrate technology into instruction
Create a conducive learning environment for effective knowledge transfer
Continuously revise and upgrade course content and teaching methods
Research
Lead and participate in relevant research initiatives
Publish research findings in accredited journals and reputable books
Present at national and international academic conferences
Source and secure external research funding
Community Engagement
Design and implement community engagement projects
Integrate community service learning into curricula
Report on engagement initiatives and maintain stakeholder relationships
Curriculum Development and Accreditation
Participate in the development and review of academic programs
Align curriculum with national education standards
Prepare documentation for programme accreditation
Student Academic Development
Identify at-risk students and provide appropriate academic support
Monitor and evaluate student progress
Refer students to relevant academic and support services
Administration
Record and manage student attendance and academic results
Assist with student registration and exam supervision
Participate in and lead departmental meetings and committees
Quality Assurance
Contribute to institutional and departmental quality assurance frameworks
Develop and implement feedback and evaluation systems
Academic Management
Participate in policy development and academic planning
Set and evaluate performance objectives related to academic activities
Manage tutor operations and contribute to institutional academic strategy
Personal and Professional Development
Stay abreast of academic and pedagogical trends
Participate in professional development opportunities and scholarly forums
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
Prepare academic and operational reports
Maintain active communication with stakeholders and contribute to institutional governance
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Minimum Requirements
PhD/Doctorate in a relevant discipline
At least five years of relevant experience, with three years in Higher Education
Proven research productivity: DHET-accredited publications, peer-reviewed conferences
Evidence of curriculum development and innovative teaching practices
Experience supervising postgraduate students
Recommended
NRF Rating (preferred)
Experience with external examination/moderation
Demonstrated capacity for research funding acquisition
High citation index (e.g. Scopus H-index)
