Job Description
The Senior Accountant will lead financial reporting and audit management processes, coordinate cross-border financial activities, and ensure adherence to accounting standards and donor requirements. The successful candidate will have in-depth experience with Sage Intacct and Bill.com, a strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, and hands-on experience in non-profit accounting. The role requires independence, analytical thinking, and the ability to work across time zones, with working hours aligned to U.S. Eastern Standard Time.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Record payroll, benefits, investment, and credit card transactions accurately.
Process Accounts Payable and Receivable, including invoice generation and tracking.
Execute payments via Bill.com, including ACH, checks, and wire transfers.
Reconcile bank, prepaid, fixed asset, and accrued expense accounts monthly.
Manage the Kenya annual financial audit, liaising directly with external auditors.
Prepare and review audit schedules for the U.S. entity; support the annual audit process.
Ensure compliance with U.S. tax and reporting requirements, including 1099 filings.
Update and maintain the Chart of Accounts in Sage Intacct and Bill.com.
Support the completion of Form 990 and related financial filings.
Conduct financial training sessions and assist regional teams with accounting system updates.
Maintain accurate records and documentation for internal and external audits.
Collaborate with the Controller to strengthen internal financial controls and procedures.
Perform additional duties as assigned to support organizational goals.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in accounting, with strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and non-profit financial reporting.
Prior experience managing U.S. and Kenya-based non-profit audits.
Hands-on proficiency with Sage Intacct, Bill.com, and expense management systems.
Experience with IRS Form 990 and 1099 preparation.
Knowledge of donor revenue reconciliation and compliance procedures.
Core Competencies:
Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
High attention to detail and accuracy in financial data management.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
Ability to work independently across multiple time zones.
Commitment to integrity, transparency, and ethical financial practices.
Preferred Attributes:
CPA or equivalent professional certification (an added advantage).
Experience in international NGO financial operations.
