About the Organisation
The National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) is an agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) with the mandate to coordinate and oversee all aspects of public-funded agricultural research in Uganda.
Established as a body corporate by the National Agricultural Research Act of 2005, NARO comprises a Governing Council, a Secretariat and 16 Public Agricultural Research Institutes (PARIs) spread across the country.
NARO is mandated to undertake research in all aspects of agriculture including crops, livestock, fisheries, forestry, agro-machinery, natural resources and socio-economics.

Job Description
A successful applicant will be responsible for planning, designing, and conducting research and presenting findings in their respective fields for enhanced and sustainable aquaculture production.
Duties and Responsibilities
Research Planning: Develop research plans and proposals focused on specific aspects of aquaculture, such as breeding, nutrition, disease management, or sustainable production methods.
Data Collection: Collect data through fieldwork, experiments, surveys, or literature reviews to gather information relevant to the research objectives.
Experimental Design: Design and implement experiments or trials to test hypotheses, evaluate new technologies, or assess the effectiveness of aquaculture practices.
Data Analysis: Analyze research data using statistical software or other analytical tools to draw conclusions, identify trends, and interpret results.
Documentation: Prepare research reports, scientific papers, or presentations to document findings, methodologies, and conclusions for publication in academic journals, conference presentations, or internal reports.
Technology Development: Explore and develop innovative technologies or methodologies to improve aquaculture practices, enhance productivity, or address specific challenges faced by the aquaculture industry.
Species Management: Study the biology, physiology, and behavior of aquaculture species to optimize their growth, health, and reproduction in captivity.
Disease Management: Investigate methods for preventing, controlling, or treating diseases affecting aquaculture species, including the development of vaccines, biosecurity protocols, or disease-resistant strains.
Environmental Impact Assessment: Assess the environmental impact of aquaculture operations and develop strategies to minimize negative impacts on ecosystems, water quality, and biodiversity.
Collaboration and Networking: Collaborate with other researchers, industry stakeholders, government agencies, and academic institutions to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and foster collaboration on aquaculture research projects.
Training and Extension: Provide training, technical assistance, and extension services to aquaculture farmers, industry professionals, and policymakers to disseminate research findings and promote best practices in aquaculture management.
Grant Writing: Identify funding opportunities, prepare grant proposals, and secure research funding from government agencies, non-profit organizations, or private foundations to support aquaculture research initiatives.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, permits, and ethical guidelines governing aquaculture research, including animal welfare standards, biosecurity protocols, and environmental regulations.
Continuous Learning: Stay updated on the latest developments, trends, and advancements in aquaculture research by attending conferences, workshops, and training programs, and by actively engaging with scientific literature and professional networks.

Qualifications and Competencies
Bachelor's Degree in Fisheries Sciences
Master's Degree in Aquaculture
Should have a minimum of three years of demonstrated working experience in a related field and a proven record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Possession of a PhD or admission to a PhD Programme is an added advantage.
