Review proposed development projects, site plans, and zoning requests to ensure compliance with applicable zoning laws, land use regulations, and planning policies. Make recommendations to planning commissions or governing bodies regarding project approvals or modifications.
Land Use Planning: Analyze land use patterns, demographics, economic trends, and environmental factors to develop comprehensive land use plans and policies that guide future development and growth within a community or region.
Zoning and Development Review: Review proposed development projects, site plans, and zoning requests to ensure compliance with applicable zoning laws, land use regulations, and planning policies. Make recommendations to planning commissions or governing bodies regarding project approvals or modifications.
Community Engagement: Facilitate community engagement processes, public hearings, and workshops to gather input from residents, businesses, and stakeholders on planning initiatives, development proposals, and land use decisions. Actively involve the public in the planning process to promote transparency, inclusivity, and community buy-in.
Environmental Planning: Assess the environmental impacts of development projects and land use decisions, including effects on air and water quality, natural habitats, and ecological systems. Develop strategies to mitigate adverse impacts and promote sustainable development practices.
Transportation Planning: Evaluate transportation infrastructure and traffic patterns to identify transportation needs, alleviate congestion, improve safety, and enhance mobility for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Develop transportation plans and policies that promote alternative modes of transportation, such as public transit, biking, and walking.
Policy Development: Research and analyze planning issues, trends, and best practices to inform the development of planning policies, ordinances, and regulations. Make recommendations for policy changes or updates to address emerging challenges and opportunities.
GIS Mapping and Data Analysis: Utilize GIS software and spatial analysis techniques to map land use patterns, demographic trends, transportation networks, environmental resources, and other spatial data relevant to planning projects. Use data-driven insights to support planning decisions and policy development.
Project Coordination: Coordinate planning efforts with other government agencies, departments, and external stakeholders involved in development review, infrastructure planning, environmental protection, economic development, and public service delivery.
Plan Implementation: Monitor and track progress on the implementation of adopted plans, policies, and regulations. Collaborate with stakeholders to overcome barriers to implementation and ensure that planning goals and objectives are achieved effectively.
Professional Development: Stay informed about current planning trends, legislative changes, and emerging issues in the field of urban planning. Participate in professional development activities, such as conferences, workshops, and training programs, to enhance skills and knowledge and maintain professional certifications.

Education: Typically, a bachelor's degree in urban planning, architecture, geography, civil engineering, environmental studies, or a related field is required. Some positions may prefer or require a master's degree in urban planning or a related discipline.
Certification/Licensure: Depending on the jurisdiction, certification or licensure as a professional planner may be required or preferred. This often involves passing a certification exam and meeting specific education and experience requirements set by a professional planning association or licensing board.
Experience: Entry-level positions may require minimal to no experience, while mid-level and senior positions typically require several years of professional experience in urban planning or a related field. Experience with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software and urban planning software may also be preferred.
Knowledge and Skills: Strong understanding of urban planning principles, land use regulations, zoning laws, environmental regulations, transportation planning, and sustainable development practices. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills are essential, as well as proficiency in data analysis and research methods. Strong written and verbal communication skills are also important for effectively communicating planning concepts to diverse stakeholders.
Computer Skills: Proficiency in computer software commonly used in urban planning, such as GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS), CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, and urban planning software (e.g., SketchUp, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite).
Interpersonal Skills: Ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders, including government officials, community members, developers, engineers, architects, and other professionals involved in the planning process. Strong negotiation, diplomacy, and consensus-building skills are important for navigating conflicting interests and finding mutually acceptable solutions.
Project Management: Experience or familiarity with project management principles and practices, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, adhere to deadlines, and allocate resources effectively.
Legal and Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with local, state/provincial, and national planning laws, regulations, and policies governing land use, zoning, environmental protection, and development approvals.
