The Nutrition Officer will be responsible for overseeing the designing, implementation, monitoring & evaluation of nutrition programs under the project aiming at improving the nutritional status of pregnant and lactating mothers. The incumbent will work closely with target communities, relevant government and community structures, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders in the food security and nutrition sectors to create sustainable solutions for combating malnutrition among children, pregnant & lactating mothers.

  • Develop project operational plans and detailed strategies for the effective implementation of Enhancing food security and nutritional outcomes for vulnerable women and children in West Nile, Northern Uganda project activities.

  • Lead in Setting up clear targeting criteria, identification, verification, and selection of target beneficiaries ensuring inclusivity and diversity.

  • Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments to identify the nutritional needs of children, pregnant and lactating mothers.

  • Develop and oversee nutrition education & training programs to raise awareness about healthy eating practices, the importance of balanced diets, and the prevention of malnutrition among mothers and children.

  • Develop training/education and social behavioural change communication materials on healthy nutrition, hygiene, and sanitation practices.

  • Coordinate training of target communities, DCA and Partner's staff on basic nutrition education, cash transfer for Nutrition, and Financial Literacy.

  • Collaborate and support district/sub-county nutrition coordination committees, village health teams, and health facilities to identify and address nutritional challenges and involve community members in the design and implementation of nutrition interventions.

  • Coordinate Nutrition activities with other healthcare professionals, NGOs, government agencies, and partner organizations to coordinate efforts and leverage resources for maximum impact.

  • Conduct regular assessments and surveys to measure the effectiveness of the training initiatives and gather feedback for improvement.

  • As deemed required, Provide one-on-one counselling and support to mothers with specific dietary needs, health conditions, or those risk of malnutrition.

  • Organize workshops, conferences, networking events and knowledge-sharing sessions to enhance the skills and knowledge of project staff and partners and foster collaboration.

  • Regularly assess the impact and effectiveness of nutrition programs, making data-driven adjustments as needed to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Maintain accurate records of program activities, including data collection, progress reports, and case studies to demonstrate program effectiveness and impact.

  • Prepare timely reports on project activities, outcomes, and challenges encountered, highlighting key achievements and recommendations.

  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition or a related field. A master’s degree is a plus.

  • Relevant experience of at least 5 years in nutrition programs, preferably in an NGO setting

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare reports.

  • Proactive mindset with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

  • Familiarity with work in refugee settlements, and refugee host-communities is an added advantage.

  • Strong understanding of Uganda nutrition principles, food security, and public health.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, analyse, and interpret data effectively.
