Job Description
As the News Editor, you will define and execute the editorial vision of BBC Great Lakes, ensuring content meets high journalistic standards and resonates with varied audiences. You will spearhead strategic content planning across digital and radio, foster innovation, manage a cross-functional team, and engage in stakeholder collaboration to drive impactful storytelling. The role demands a keen understanding of regional dynamics, strong leadership, and the ability to navigate fast-paced news environments.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Lead the editorial direction and vision of BBC Great Lakes.
Uphold high editorial standards and impartial reporting.
Develop strategies to grow audience engagement, especially on digital platforms.
Analyze audience data to inform editorial and content decisions.
Oversee timely delivery of content while maintaining journalistic quality.
Collaborate with journalists across Africa and internationally.
Supervise content creation from concept to publication.
Pilot new media formats and assess their impact.
Mentor and guide journalists, encouraging professional development.
Work with various departments to align content with organizational goals.
Build relationships with external contributors and experts.
Represent BBC Great Lakes at events and public forums.
Promote diversity in both team composition and editorial output.
Manage the budget and ensure financial compliance.
Leverage central BBC content for cost-effective programming.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Fluent in Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, and English.
Strong editorial judgment and storytelling acumen.
Senior-level experience in radio and digital content production in the Great Lakes region.
Proven success in launching and growing digital media initiatives.
Competency in using data analytics to guide content strategy.
Demonstrated experience in strategic leadership and team motivation.
Strong track record in investigative and breaking news journalism.
Commitment to diversity and inclusive storytelling.
In-depth understanding of African socio-political dynamics.
Proficient in video and audio editing.
Skilled in social media and online news dissemination.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Experience managing legal and editorial compliance issues.
