The Aga Khan Education Service in Uganda was established in the early 1930s in 20 villages and towns, including Masaka, Mbale, Jinja and Mbarara.
Currently, AKES in Uganda runs co-educational day schools located in central Kampala and attended by over 30 nationalities at Nursery, Primary and Secondary levels.

Over the years the institutions of AKES in Uganda have come to be recognised as spaces for inquiry, development, learning and quality education from the nursery to secondary level. A total student population of over 2000 children are taught by 150 full-time teaching staff, who are supported by part-time and volunteer educators.

AKES, U is a private, not-for-profit organization committed to enriching the lives of "many generations of multi-racial and multi-cultural student populations" through the provision of quality and affordable education. AKES, U operates schools from Pre-School to High School and offers the Cambridge Curriculum, International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and the Uganda National Primary and Secondary Curriculum.

We are seeking to hire experienced, result oriented and motivated individuals to fill the following position

  • Curriculum Development: Develop and implement lesson plans and instructional materials that align with state or national standards for social studies education. This includes selecting appropriate content, resources, and teaching strategies to engage students and facilitate learning.

  • Classroom Instruction: Deliver dynamic and interactive lessons on various topics within the social studies discipline, such as history, geography, civics, economics, and sociology. Utilize a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, discussions, group activities, multimedia presentations, and experiential learning opportunities.

  • Student Assessment: Design and administer assessments, quizzes, tests, and projects to evaluate students' understanding of social studies concepts, critical thinking skills, and academic progress. Provide constructive feedback to students and parents on their performance and areas for improvement.

  • Differentiated Instruction: Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs and learning styles of students, including those with special needs, English language learners, and gifted learners. Modify instructional strategies, materials, and assessments to accommodate individual learning preferences and abilities.

  • Classroom Management: Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning and respectful behavior. Implement consistent and fair disciplinary procedures, routines, and expectations to promote student engagement, cooperation, and mutual respect.

  • Technology Integration: Incorporate technology tools and resources, such as interactive whiteboards, educational software, multimedia presentations, and online research platforms, into social studies instruction to enhance learning experiences and digital literacy skills.

  • Cultural Competence: Foster an appreciation for cultural diversity and global perspectives in social studies education. Integrate multicultural perspectives, historical narratives, and current events from diverse cultures and regions into the curriculum to promote empathy, tolerance, and cross-cultural understanding.

  • Community Engagement: Connect classroom learning to real-world contexts by organizing field trips, guest speakers, service-learning projects, and community-based activities. Encourage students to apply social studies concepts and skills to address local and global issues and make positive contributions to their communities.

  • Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development activities, such as workshops, conferences, courses, and peer collaboration, to enhance subject knowledge, teaching skills, and pedagogical practices in social studies education. Stay updated on current research, trends, and best practices in social studies instruction.

  • Parent Communication: Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to provide updates on students' progress, academic performance, and classroom activities. Collaborate with parents to support students' learning goals, address concerns, and promote parental involvement in social studies education.

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in education with a specialization in social studies, history, geography, political science, or a related field is typically required. Some positions may require a master's degree or additional coursework in social studies education.

  • Teaching Certification: Valid teaching certification or licensure is required to teach social studies at the K-12 level in public schools. Requirements vary by state or country but generally include completing an approved teacher education program and passing relevant exams.

  • Subject Matter Expertise: In-depth knowledge of social studies content areas, including historical events, geographical regions, government structures, economic systems, cultural diversity, and social issues. Familiarity with state or national social studies standards and curriculum frameworks.

  • Teaching Experience: Previous experience as a social studies teacher or educator is preferred, particularly at the grade level and in the educational setting (e.g., elementary, middle school, high school) for which the position is hiring.

  • Pedagogical Skills: Strong instructional and classroom management skills to engage students, facilitate learning, and maintain a positive and productive learning environment. Ability to differentiate instruction and adapt teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of learners.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex social studies concepts clearly and effectively, facilitate class discussions, and interact with students, colleagues, parents, and stakeholders.

  • Technology Proficiency: Proficiency in educational technology tools, software applications, and digital resources commonly used in social studies instruction, such as learning management systems, interactive whiteboards, multimedia presentations, and educational websites.

  • Cultural Competency: Sensitivity to cultural diversity, social justice issues, and inclusive teaching practices. Ability to create a culturally responsive curriculum that reflects the experiences and perspectives of diverse student populations.

  • Collaborative Skills: Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, administrators, parents, and community partners to support student learning, promote academic success, and foster a positive school culture.

  • Professionalism: Commitment to professional ethics, integrity, and continuous improvement in teaching practice. Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development, reflective practice, and collaboration with peers to enhance teaching effectiveness and student achievement.
