Job Description
Job Title: Geotechnical & Materials Engineer
Organisation: M-Forte
Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda
Job Summary: The Geotechnical & Materials Engineer will be responsible for investigating and assessing subsurface conditions, determining the engineering properties of soil and rock, and providing foundation design recommendations for all construction projects. This role also oversees materials testing and quality control to ensure compliance with project specifications.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Site Investigation:
Plan, execute, and supervise geotechnical field investigations, including boreholes, test pits, and in-situ testing (e.g., Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), Cone Penetration Tests (CPT)).
Collect, log, and analyze soil and rock samples.
Analysis and Reporting:
Perform comprehensive geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, settlement analysis, retaining wall design, and shallow/deep foundation design.
Prepare detailed, professional geotechnical reports outlining site conditions, laboratory results, engineering conclusions, and foundation recommendations.
Materials Testing and Quality Control:
Oversee and conduct laboratory testing of construction materials (soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregates) to verify compliance with project specifications and relevant standards.
Develop and implement quality control plans for materials used on site.
Technical Support and Collaboration:
Provide technical support to structural and civil engineering design teams, integrating geotechnical risks and solutions into the overall project plan.
Work with site supervision teams to address foundation and earthworks issues during construction.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, specializing in Geotechnical Engineering or Materials Science. A relevant Master’s degree is highly desirable.
Registration: Must be a registered or working towards professional registration with the relevant engineering body (e.g., ERB).
Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in geotechnical site investigation, laboratory testing, and preparation of foundation design reports for large civil or building projects.
5 years of general Professional Experience
Technical Skills: Proficiency in geotechnical software (e.g., GEO5, PLAXIS) and strong analytical modeling skills.
Core Competencies
Deep understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and foundation engineering principles.
Excellent technical report writing and presentation skills.
Proven ability to manage field teams and laboratory operations.
