About planetGOLD Uganda
The planetGOLD Uganda project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). In Uganda, IMPACT is the executing agency, in partnership with Uganda’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the country’s Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM).
The project will work together with local communities to reduce the use of mercury in artisanal and smallscale gold mining—the world’s largest source of anthropogenic emissions of mercury pollution— while improving the health and lives of local mining communities. Gender Officer
The Gender Officer supports implementation of the Gender Action Plan for the planetGOLD Uganda project. Working closely with the Project Manager and other colleagues in the project’s management unit (PMU), the Gender Officer supports the implementation of a range of project activities, ensuring that a gender lens is applied to each activity and that women’s inclusion and empowerment remains a high priority throughout the project.
Under the supervision of the planetGOLD Uganda Project Manager, the Gender Officer works closely with all members of the planetGOLD Uganda project management unit (PMU). The Gender Officer will have initial support from IMPACT’s Senior Gender and Inclusion Specialist. The Gender Officer has the following primary responsibilities:

Participate in Activity Planning & Execution (60%)
Participate in activity planning and execution with the objective of ensuring the optimization of women’s full and effective participation in project activities.
Ensure that elements of the Gender Action Plan are streamlined into the project’s activity planning and implementation.
Liaise with women stakeholders (e.g. women miners, traders, community leaders, etc.) to solicit input and feedback into activity planning and implementation.
Serve as a resource person for women beneficiaries of the project who may require additional information or support to participate effectively in project activities.
Collaborate with other members of the PMU with respect to communications needs for activities, streamlining of the project’s gender action plan and stakeholder engagement plan, procurement and logistics coordinator, or other.
Ensure proper tracking of the necessary (gender-disaggregated) information related to activity implementation that is required for donor reporting and monitoring and evaluation, in close collaboration with the Training and Sensitization Coordinator.
Prepare and execute specific activities targeting women beneficiaries and/or stakeholders of the planetGOLD Uganda project, where needed.
Stakeholder Engagement (30%)
Respond to requests for information by project beneficiaries and stakeholders, as well as potential new stakeholders, especially in relation to the Gender Action Plan.
Support the Project Manager and the Events and Meeting Coordinator with planning and execution of relevant stakeholder engagement activities, as needed (e.g. National Workshop) – especially with respect to promoting women’s full and effective participation.
Communications (10%)
Proactively share information related to activity implementation and the gendered impacts on project beneficiaries in the ASGM sector with the Communications Manager.
Respond to targeted information requests from the Communications Manager in support of the development of specific communications and knowledge-sharing products.
Provide guidance to the Communications Manager and any communications consultants for the project on how to best communicate effectively with women beneficiaries and stakeholders.
Coordinate direct communication between the Communications Manager and project beneficiaries, where needed.

Qualifications
The successful candidate MUST have the following experience and skills:
Minimum 3 years of experience working in the international development sector
Fluency in English; knowledge of other languages spoken in Uganda is considered an asset
Demonstrated experience with gender equality issues and the human-rights-bases approach applied in the context of international development
Bachelor’s degree in Law, International Development, Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Human Rights, Peace-building and Conflict Studies or related area of study
Strong Microsoft office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Experience in monitoring and evaluation and/or communications is an asset
