Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) Limited is a limited liability company solely owned by the Government of Uganda (GOU). It was established under Section 42 of the Petroleum (Exploration, Development, and Production) Act and Section 7 of the Petroleum (Refining, Conversion, Transmission and Midstream Storage) Act, both of 2013. It was incorporated under the Companies Act of 2012 as a limited liability company on June 12th, 2015.

The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) Limited was established under the Petroleum (Exploration, Development and Production) Act and the Petroleum (Refining, Conversion, Transmission and Midstream storage) Act, both of 2013 and incorporated under the Companies' Act, 2012. It is a limited liability company wholly owned by the Government of Uganda. The overall function of UNOC is to handle the State's commercial interests in the Oil and Gas industry and ensure that the resource is exploited in a sustainable manner.

What We Do
Manage the Government’s commercial interests in the petroleum sector and are mandated to ensure that the resource is exploited in a sustainable manner.
Investigate and propose new upstream, midstream, and downstream ventures initially locally and eventually internationally. Develop in depth expertise in the oil and gas sector.
Participate in joint ventures in which it holds an interest on behalf of the State

  • Strategy Development: Develop and implement environmental, social, and governance strategies, policies, and initiatives aligned with the organization's mission, values, and long-term objectives.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including investors, employees, customers, communities, and regulatory bodies, to understand their ESG expectations, concerns, and feedback.

  • Risk Assessment: Conduct ESG risk assessments and impact analyses to identify potential risks, opportunities, and areas for improvement in environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and corporate governance practices.

  • Compliance Monitoring: Monitor compliance with environmental regulations, social standards, and corporate governance guidelines, ensuring adherence to legal requirements, industry best practices, and international standards (e.g., UN Global Compact, ISO 26000).

  • Reporting and Disclosure: Prepare and publish ESG reports, disclosures, and sustainability metrics to provide transparency, accountability, and performance measurement to stakeholders, investors, and the public.

  • Metrics Tracking: Track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) and ESG metrics related to energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, diversity and inclusion, human rights, labor practices, community engagement, and ethical business conduct.

  • ESG Integration: Integrate ESG considerations into decision-making processes, investment strategies, product development, supply chain management, and corporate governance structures to create long-term value and mitigate risks.

  • Partnerships and Collaboration: Establish partnerships and collaborations with industry peers, NGOs, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to share best practices, leverage resources, and drive collective action on ESG issues.

  • Training and Awareness: Provide training, education, and awareness programs to employees, suppliers, and partners on ESG topics, sustainability practices, and responsible business conduct to foster a culture of ESG awareness and responsibility.

  • Continuous Improvement: Continuously monitor, evaluate, and improve ESG performance through feedback mechanisms, performance reviews, benchmarking, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in environmental science, sustainability, social sciences, business administration, finance, or a related field is typically required. Advanced degrees (e.g., MBA, MSc, or PhD) may be preferred.

  • Experience: Several years of experience in ESG management, sustainability consulting, corporate social responsibility (CSR), impact investing, or related fields, preferably in leadership or executive roles.

  • Subject Matter Expertise: Deep understanding of environmental issues, social trends, and governance frameworks relevant to business operations, industries, and regions. Familiarity with ESG standards, frameworks (e.g., GRI, SASB, TCFD), and reporting guidelines is essential.

  • Strategic Thinking: Strong strategic planning and analytical skills to develop and implement ESG strategies, set measurable goals and targets, and align ESG initiatives with business objectives and stakeholder expectations.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage with diverse stakeholders, build relationships, negotiate agreements, and influence decision-makers at all levels of the organization.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Up-to-date knowledge of environmental regulations, labor laws, human rights standards, corporate governance principles, and industry-specific ESG requirements applicable to the organization's operations and markets.

  • Data Analysis: Proficiency in data analysis, reporting tools, and sustainability software platforms to collect, analyze, and visualize ESG data, metrics, and performance indicators for reporting and decision-making purposes.

  • Project Management: Strong project management skills to plan, execute, and oversee ESG initiatives, coordinate cross-functional teams, manage budgets and resources, and deliver results on time and within scope.

  • Leadership and Influence: Demonstrated leadership capabilities to inspire, motivate, and lead teams, drive change, and foster a culture of sustainability, ethics, and corporate responsibility across the organization.

  • Ethical Conduct: Commitment to ethical conduct, integrity, transparency, and accountability in all aspects of ESG management, business operations, and stakeholder interactions.
