Job Description

Adara Development is seeking a Director of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) to lead their groundbreaking AdaraNewborn work across Uganda and globally. AdaraNewborn is an evidence-based, high-impact model with the power to halve maternal and newborn deaths across 10 Ugandan health facilities.

ABOUT THE ROLE
This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the Director of MNCH for Adara Development (Uganda). As the leader of Adara’s Uganda operations, the Director will be responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of Adara’s MNCH strategy.
They will ensure the delivery of high-quality programming, foster strong partnerships, and provide exceptional financial management and governance. Leading a team of 18 people and acting a key member of Adara’s Global Leadership Team, this role will be instrumental in achieving Adara’s ambitious vision.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Program Development: Designing and implementing comprehensive MNCH programs that address the specific needs of mothers, newborns, and children.

  • Policy Formulation: Developing and advocating for policies that promote maternal, newborn, and child health at local, national, and international levels.

  • Leadership: Providing visionary leadership to the MNCH team, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.


Program Management

  • Implementation Oversight: Overseeing the implementation of MNCH programs, ensuring they are carried out effectively and efficiently.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Establishing monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess the impact and effectiveness of MNCH programs.

  • Resource Management: Managing financial and human resources allocated to MNCH programs, ensuring optimal utilization and accountability.


Advocacy and Partnership Building

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, international organizations, and community groups.

  • Advocacy: Advocating for increased funding and support for MNCH initiatives, representing the organization at conferences, workshops, and policy discussions.

  • Collaboration: Collaborating with other health programs and sectors to create integrated approaches to health care delivery.


Technical Expertise and Capacity Building

  • Technical Guidance: Providing technical expertise and guidance on MNCH best practices and evidence-based interventions.

  • Capacity Building: Developing and implementing training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of healthcare providers and program staff.

  • Research and Innovation: Promoting and conducting research to identify innovative solutions and improve existing MNCH practices.


Quality Assurance and Improvement

  • Quality Standards: Establishing and enforcing quality standards for MNCH services to ensure high-quality care.

  • Continuous Improvement: Identifying areas for improvement and implementing strategies to enhance program effectiveness and outcomes.

  • Data Utilization: Using data and feedback to inform program adjustments and improvements.


Communication and Reporting

  • Reporting: Preparing and presenting regular reports on program progress, challenges, and achievements to senior management, donors, and other stakeholders.

  • Information Dissemination: Ensuring that relevant information and findings are disseminated to stakeholders, policymakers, and the public.

  • Public Awareness: Leading public awareness campaigns to promote the importance of maternal, newborn, and child health.


Crisis Management

  • Emergency Response: Coordinating and managing responses to health emergencies affecting mothers, newborns, and children, such as disease outbreaks or natural disasters.

  • Preparedness Planning: Developing and implementing preparedness plans to ensure swift and effective responses to potential health crises.


Ethical and Cultural Sensitivity

  • Ethical Standards: Upholding the highest ethical standards in all aspects of MNCH program delivery.

  • Cultural Competence: Ensuring that programs are culturally sensitive and tailored to meet the diverse needs of the populations served.


Fundraising and Resource Mobilization

  • Fundraising Efforts: Leading efforts to secure funding from donors, grant-making organizations, and other sources to support MNCH initiatives.

  • Budget Management: Overseeing the development and management of budgets for MNCH programs, ensuring financial sustainability.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • 10+ years’ experience in a leadership role within a large or international organisation.

  • Extensive experience with strategic planning, leadership and people management, quality improvement, project management and planning, monitoring and evaluation, and financial management.

  • Proven clinical and programme experience working in the delivery of maternal and child health service delivery programs

  • Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., medicine, nursing, public health, social work, international development, business management, administration or finance).

  • Formal clinical training, practice and background in either maternal, newborn or child health

  • Fluency in Luganda and in spoken and written English to tertiary level.

  • Comfortable working at both strategic and operational level.

  • Ability to work cross-culturally and across different time zones, sometimes out of regular business hours.
