Job Description
Reporting to the Critical Care Consultant (clinical duties) and the Medical Director of Critical Care (academic/administrative duties), the Critical Care Instructor/Registrar is responsible for the assessment, treatment, and follow-up of critically ill patients. The role also involves mentoring junior staff, participating in multidisciplinary rounds, performing procedures within their competence, developing care plans, communicating with patient families and referring physicians, and contributing to institutional quality improvement and academic activities. The role includes emergency consultation and clinical decision-making under supervision, teaching responsibilities, and participation in morbidity and mortality meetings.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Manage critically ill patients in the ICU and HDU under consultant supervision
Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and contribute to care planning
Conduct clinical instruction for medical students, interns, and residents
Perform critical care procedures within scope and competence
Communicate with patients, families, and healthcare providers
Assist in triaging and assessing potential ICU patients
Participate in policy and guideline development
Support resource efficiency and error reduction in patient care
Engage in institutional research, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives
Present in morbidity and mortality meetings
Maintain and improve professional competencies through training and feedback
Fulfill additional duties as assigned by the Critical Care Medical Director
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent
Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, or Emergency Medicine OR successful completion of residency in one of these specialties
Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Clinical proficiency in critical care equipment and procedures
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Demonstrates integrity, professionalism, and ethical medical practice
Reliable, punctual, and team-oriented
Basic computer literacy and electronic medical records experience is an advantage
