Job Description

The Country Representative serves as the head of the UN Women Tanzania Country Office and is responsible for strategic planning, programme management, team leadership, inter-agency coordination, and resource mobilization. Reporting to the Regional Director (East and Southern Africa), the Representative oversees the implementation of the Country Strategic Note, aligns country priorities with national and global frameworks, and leads efforts to ensure the protection and empowerment of women and girls.

The incumbent plays a key role in supporting Tanzania’s development plans through UN Women’s core areas of focus: women’s leadership, economic empowerment, ending violence against women and girls, gender-responsive governance, and accountability systems. The Representative also ensures that the office actively supports the UN’s broader strategic goals under the UNSDCF and other inter-agency platforms.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the country’s strategic direction in alignment with national priorities, SDGs, and the UNSDCF.

  • Lead the preparation and development of the Country Strategic Note and annual work plans.

  • Oversee results-based programme design, planning, implementation, and reporting.

  • Guide the Country Office in meeting operational and programmatic goals.

  • Provide strategic guidance on partnerships and donor relations.

  • Represent UN Women in high-level dialogues, inter-agency platforms, and international forums.

  • Oversee audits and ensure timely response to audit findings.

  • Lead and manage staff performance, career development, and recruitment.

  • Mobilize resources, enhance visibility, and promote inter-agency coordination for gender equality.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Education:

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent in social sciences, international development, gender studies, or related field.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in development, gender equality, or related work, including management experience in a multicultural setting.

  • Proven experience in strategic planning, programme development, and inter-agency coordination.

  • Strong experience working with national governments, civil society, and donors.

  • Previous UN or international development agency experience is an asset.

Competencies:

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.

  • Proven ability to develop high-level strategic partnerships.

  • Strong results-based management and analytical capabilities.

  • Demonstrated commitment to gender equality and women’s rights.
