Consultant (Psychiatry) job at Health Service Commission

Job Description

As a Consultant in Psychiatry, your duties typically involve a combination of clinical, administrative, teaching, and research responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assessment and Diagnosis: Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations to assess patients' mental health status, including psychiatric history, symptoms, and functional impairments.

  • Treatment Planning: Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings, incorporating psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and other modalities as appropriate.

  • Medication Management: Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications, adjusting dosage and medications as needed to optimize therapeutic outcomes while minimizing side effects.

  • Psychotherapy: Provide various forms of psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and supportive therapy, depending on patient needs and preferences.

  • Crisis Intervention: Offer crisis intervention services for patients experiencing acute psychiatric crises, including risk assessment, safety planning, and coordination of emergency psychiatric care.

  • Collaborative Care: Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including primary care physicians, psychologists, social workers, and psychiatric nurses, to provide coordinated, multidisciplinary care for patients with complex psychiatric needs.


Duties:

  • Supervision and Consultation: Provide clinical supervision and consultation to junior psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, medical students, and other mental health professionals.

  • Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality and safety of psychiatric care delivery within the healthcare institution.

  • Clinical Governance: Ensure compliance with relevant clinical governance standards, including documentation requirements, risk management, and adherence to evidence-based practices.

  • Service Development: Contribute to the development and implementation of new psychiatric services, programs, and initiatives to address emerging clinical needs and improve patient outcomes.

  • Resource Management: Efficiently manage clinical resources, including psychiatric medications, therapeutic interventions, and psychiatric assessment tools, within budgetary constraints.

  • Policy Development: Contribute to the development of institutional policies and protocols related to psychiatric care delivery, patient safety, and ethical standards.


Teaching and Research Duties (if applicable):

  • Education: Provide psychiatric education and training to medical students, psychiatric residents, and other healthcare professionals through lectures, case conferences, and supervision sessions.

  • Research: Engage in clinical research activities, including designing and conducting research studies, collecting and analyzing data, and disseminating research findings through publications and presentations.

  • Continuing Professional Development: Stay abreast of recent advances in psychiatric research and evidence-based practices through participation in continuing medical education (CME) activities, conferences, and professional development seminars.

  • Academic and professional certificates (UCE, UACE, Professional Certificates, Diplomas, Degrees, Fellowships).

  • Evidence of training in specialized areas where applicable.

  • Letters of appointment, confirmation and promotion where applicable.

  • Registration certificates and valid practicing licenses for health workers who are required by law to register with relevant Professional Councils.


  • National and current Institutional Identity Cards.

• Candidates who will present forged certificates and other documents shall be handed over to the Police for appropriate action.
• Health Workers who are on long-term training (one year and above) must not apply.
