Consultant (Pathology) job at Health Service Commission

Job Description

These duties and requirements may vary depending on the specific healthcare institution, practice setting, and regional regulations. Additionally, pathologists may choose to specialize in subspecialty areas such as surgical pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, molecular pathology, forensic pathology, or neuropathology, which may require additional training and expertise.

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Diagnostic Pathology: Examine specimens obtained from surgeries, biopsies, and autopsies to diagnose diseases, including cancers, infections, and inflammatory conditions.

  • Reporting: Prepare accurate and detailed pathology reports documenting findings, including microscopic descriptions, diagnoses, and recommendations for further testing or treatment.

  • Consultation: Provide expert consultation to clinicians, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals regarding the interpretation of pathology results and implications for patient management.

  • Quality Assurance: Ensure the quality and accuracy of pathology services through adherence to standardized protocols, proficiency testing, and participation in quality improvement initiatives.

  • Autopsy Pathology: Conduct autopsies to determine the cause of death, identify underlying diseases, and provide insights into clinical management and public health issues.


Administrative Duties:

  • Laboratory Oversight: Supervise laboratory staff, including histotechnologists, cytotechnologists, and medical laboratory scientists, to ensure efficient and accurate specimen processing and analysis.

  • Resource Management: Manage laboratory resources, including equipment, supplies, and personnel, to maintain optimal workflow and meet turnaround time targets.

  • Quality Control: Implement quality control measures and protocols to monitor the accuracy and reliability of laboratory tests and procedures.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and laboratory safety guidelines, including those set forth by regulatory bodies such as CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) and CAP (College of American Pathologists).

  • Budgeting and Financial Management: Participate in budget planning and financial management activities related to the pathology department, including cost analysis, revenue generation, and resource allocation.


Teaching and Research Duties (if applicable):

  • Education: Provide education and training to medical students, pathology residents, and laboratory staff through lectures, case conferences, and hands-on training sessions.

  • Research: Engage in clinical or translational research activities aimed at advancing knowledge in pathology, participating in research projects, publishing scientific papers, and presenting findings at conferences.

  • Continuing Professional Development: Stay current with advances in pathology practice, technology, and research through participation in continuing medical education (CME) activities, conferences, and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Medical Degree: MD or DO from an accredited medical school.

  • Pathology Residency: Completion of an accredited residency program in pathology, which typically lasts four years.

  • Board Certification: Board certification in pathology from a recognized specialty board (e.g., American Board of Pathology).

  • Licensure: Valid medical license to practice pathology in the relevant jurisdiction.

  • Clinical Experience: Demonstrated expertise in diagnostic pathology, including proficiency in interpreting histopathology, cytopathology, and clinical laboratory tests.


  • Interpersonal Skills: Effective communication and collaboration skills to interact with healthcare teams, patients, and colleagues.

  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and analytical skills to accurately interpret complex pathology findings and make precise diagnoses.
