Edukans International Uganda is implementing the Leaders in Teaching (LIT) programme supported by the Mastercard Foundation, under a consortium led by the Luigi Giussani Foundation (LGF). The LIT initiative aims to transform secondary education across Africa by strengthening the capacity of teachers and school leaders, equipping young people with the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed for dignified and fulfilling work. Working through a multi-partner model—including British Council, STIR Uganda, VVOB, PEAS, FENU, Teach For Uganda (TFU), and Brain Wave—the programme focuses on four key pillars: (1) Teacher Recruitment, (2) Teacher Training, (3) Education Leadership and Management, and (4) Teacher Motivation.

ROLE PURPOSE
The Communications Assistant will support the planning, coordination, and delivery of the LIT Programme’s communication strategy. The position plays a key role in enhancing visibility, stakeholder engagement, and public understanding of the programme’s work. The role involves developing high-quality communication products, supporting advocacy initiatives, and documenting programme learnings in collaboration with the Monitoring and Evaluation team. The Communications Assistant will ensure alignment with the communications and advocacy frameworks of the Mastercard Foundation, LGF, Edukans International, and consortium partners.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
1. Implementation of the LIT Communications Strategy
Collaborate with communications focal persons from consortium partners to co-create and operationalize an integrated communication strategy.
Produce high-quality materials including reports, presentations, infographics, briefs, blog posts, social media content, newsletters, press releases, and video stories showcasing programme achievements and innovations.
Maintain and regularly update programme content on Edukans International Uganda’s website and official communication platforms, in coordination with the Country Director’s Office.
Participate in and support training workshops on storytelling, digital content creation, and social media management.
2. Stakeholder Mapping and Engagement
Support the identification and analysis of internal and external stakeholders and tailor communication approaches to their needs.
Contribute to positioning LIT as a leading voice in education reform and teacher development.
Support development of policy-relevant content such as opinion pieces, policy briefs, knowledge products, and evidence-based communication materials.
3. Events and Campaigns
Lead in designing and implementing communication campaigns promoting CPD, gender-responsive pedagogy, and girls’ participation in STEM.
Support organization and coverage of events such as teacher recognition ceremonies, school-level activities, and consortium convenings.
4. Branding, Visibility, and Media Engagement
Build and maintain relationships with key media houses, journalists, and influencers to increase programme visibility.
Ensure consistent application of Mastercard Foundation and consortium branding guidelines across all communication outputs.
Work closely with the Communications Consultant on quality assurance of branded materials.
5. Monitoring and Evaluation of Communication Activities
Develop and apply tools for tracking communication effectiveness (e.g., analytics, media monitoring, audience feedback).
Regularly review and update the communication strategy based on performance data and emerging insights.
Package and disseminate programme learnings through briefs, snapshots, infographics, animations, and other accessible formats.

KEY AUDIENCE
Project beneficiaries, targeted districts, government stakeholders, humanitarian and development partners, UN agencies (e.g., UNHCR, UNICEF), and the donor—Mastercard Foundation.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & PERSON SPECIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field from a recognized institution.
Experience in education programming is an added advantage.
At least 5 years of progressive humanitarian or development experience, with a minimum of 2 years in a communications role within an international development or humanitarian organization.
Strong interpersonal, communication, influencing, and negotiation skills.
Proven ability to manage stakeholder relationships across government, NGOs, schools, and donor agencies.
Demonstrated capacity to produce multimedia content (videos, campaigns, webinars, social media assets).
Excellent writing, editing, and oral communication skills.
Strong computer literacy and documentation abilities.
