Job Description
Reporting to the CEO, the COO will lead key operational departments and drive the execution of strategic initiatives related to security, logistics, infrastructure, and maintenance. This role includes ensuring compliance, managing cross-functional collaboration, overseeing resource allocation and performance, and deputizing for the CEO when required. The ideal candidate will possess deep experience in conservancy or nonprofit operations, leadership, stakeholder engagement, and operational planning, with a strong commitment to sustainability and conservation principles.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Participate in the development and implementation of Conservancy strategies.
Define and cascade operational strategies aligned with the strategic plan.
Oversee infrastructure maintenance, security, and conservation support operations.
Champion development and adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Manage and optimize operational budgets and resources.
Lead, recruit, and develop a high-performing operations team.
Foster collaboration between departments and external partners.
Develop performance metrics and hold team members accountable.
Engage with stakeholders including local communities and government agencies.
Ensure legal and environmental compliance across departments.
Provide regular reports to the CEO and Board.
Monitor environmental trends affecting operations.
Act as Deputy to the CEO as required, including representation at key forums.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, Biology, Natural Resources, Environment, Ecology, or related fields.
Postgraduate qualification in Business Administration or related discipline.
Professional certification in wildlife or conservancy management preferred.
Minimum of 15 years’ experience in strategic conservation operations.
At least 10 years in senior leadership roles in environmental or nonprofit sectors.
Proven track record of program planning, stakeholder engagement, and donor relations.
High-level strategic thinking and operational execution skills.
Strong public relations, fundraising, and financial management capabilities.
Proven leadership in scaling performance-based organizations.
Experience managing cross-functional teams and building organizational capacity.
Familiarity with conservation sector compliance, policy-making, and community engagement.
Flexibility and responsiveness to dynamic operational environments.
