Job Description
The Chief, Directorate of Legal Affairs provides leadership to the Office of the Directorate and is responsible for providing legal advisory services to both Management and Council. The role ensures compliance with all existing laws and regulatory requirements governing the institution.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and ensure efficient and effective management of the staff and resources in the Directorate of Legal Affairs.
- Provide legal advisory and interpretation services to both Management and Council and ensure statutory compliance with the existing laws and regulatory requirements.
- Review and draft contracts, agreements, and internal policies and ensure that they comply with all statutory or legal requirements.
- Review progress of outstanding litigation and liaise with and manage external lawyers.
- Continuously monitor compliance with statutory obligations and advise Management.
- Prepare, negotiate, review, and draft documentation for business transactions and prepare and advise Management in compliance with all statutory or legal requirements.
- Provide continuous leadership, supervision, training, and development of the Directorate of Legal Affairs and the staff, ensuring an effective and motivated team.
- Provide legal protection and risk Management especially on contract management
- Follow up and update the Principal on Court matters and attend Court hearings for and on behalf of the School.
- Review and advise on MOUs between the School and other organizations including donors.
- Perform such other functions that may be delegated to him/her by the Principal or assigned by Council.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks while ensuring full compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Provide proactive legal guidance to management and Council to support legally sound decisions, partnerships, and organizational strategy.
- Lead the drafting, review, and negotiations of contracts and major transactions to protect the School's interests.
- Ensure strong governance practices and develop internal legal policies
- Oversee legal disputes, manage external Counsel, and minimize legal exposure and costs.
