The U.S. Mission to the United Nations (USUN) serves as the United States’ delegation to the United Nations. USUN is responsible for carrying out the nation’s participation in the world body. In 1947 the United States Mission was created by an act of Congress to assist the President and the Department of State in conducting United States policy at the United Nations. Since that time, USUN has served a vital role as the Department of State’s UN branch. Today, USUN has approximately 150 people on staff who serve to represent the United States’ political, economic and social, legal, military, public diplomacy and management interests at the United Nations.

USUN is divided into the following sections – Executive; Washington; Political; Management and Reform; Economic and Social; Legal; Military Staff; Public Affairs; Host Country; Management; and Security.

The United States Mission to the United Nations is located at 799 United Nations Plaza (between E. 44th and E. 45th on First Ave) across the street from United Nations Headquarters.

Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time following receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end

Risk Assessment and Planning:

  • Conduct Threat Assessments: Identify potential threats and assess the risk level for the client.

  • Plan Routes and Schedules: Plan safe routes and schedules, taking into account the safest and most efficient paths.

  • Secure Locations: Evaluate and secure locations where the client will be, including homes, workplaces, and public venues.


Protection and Security:

  • Close Protection: Stay close to the client to provide immediate physical protection against potential threats.

  • Defensive Techniques: Use defensive tactics to protect the client from physical harm.

  • Crowd Control: Manage crowds to prevent unauthorized individuals from approaching the client.


Surveillance and Monitoring:

  • Monitor Surroundings: Continuously monitor the environment for suspicious activity.

  • Use Technology: Employ security technology, such as surveillance cameras and communication devices, to enhance monitoring.


Transportation Security:

  • Secure Transport: Ensure that vehicles are secure and safe for the client’s use.

  • Drive Safely: Sometimes act as the driver, ensuring safe and secure transportation.

Emergency Response:

  • First Aid and Medical Response: Provide first aid or coordinate immediate medical assistance if the client is injured.

  • Evacuation Procedures: Implement emergency evacuation procedures if necessary.


Discretion and Confidentiality:

  • Maintain Confidentiality: Keep the client’s personal information and activities confidential.

  • Professional Conduct: Exhibit professionalism and discretion in all interactions and duties.

  • Coordination with Law Enforcement:

  • Liaison with Authorities: Coordinate with local law enforcement and other security personnel as necessary.


Personal Assistance:

  • General Support: Assist the client with daily activities, acting as a personal assistant if needed.

  • Completion of high/secondary school is required. Host government Driver’s License to operate up to Sport Utility Vehicle is required.


Requirements:

EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of private sector, government, police, or military experience in one or more of the following categories: bodyguard, armed escort, law enforcement officer, combat arms or infantry soldier, or other related professional security experience.


JOB KNOWLEDGE:

  • A thorough knowledge of defense measures to be used in the event of a personal or terrorist attack, such as that learned in the military or law enforcement training. Knowledge in medical, fire, hostile attack, defensive and emergency driving procedures.

  • Must be familiar with Kampala’s Police Services, military, security, and other government offices to ensure effective liaison and to facilitate effective protective operations including advance and motorcade operations.


LANGUAGE:

  • English level II (Limited knowledge) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required.

  • Luganda or Swahili level II (Limited knowledge) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have initiative and resourcefulness in accomplishing tasks.

  • Must be able to deal effectively with people of other cultures to obtain cooperation and reach common goals.

  • Possesses good leadership and interpersonal skills.

  • Must have valid driver license. Must be able to demonstrate judgment and basic safe driving skills in both oral and practical examination.

  • Should be able to operate an armored vehicle (if available) and pass the defensive driving training.

  • Good working computer skills are required.

  • Must be able to work variable shifts, 24 hour on-call schedule, and able to travel outside capital city on an as needed basis

  • Proficient in first aid and use of an AED.

  • Must be alert, have fast reflexes, active thinking, excellent observational skills, adaptation, take decisive actions, stay calm in dangerous situations, teamwork, communication skills, etc. and have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Must be willing to use and carry firearms. Prior demonstrated skills in the use of a firearm are preferred but not required.

  • Must be physically fit and be able to endure frequent travel, long working hours, and a stressful working environment while maintaining the above standards. Should be trained on emergency first-aid and be AED/CPR qualified.


Qualifications:
