Job Description
Reporting to the Senior Finance Officer, the Assistant Accountant will be responsible for handling accounting and financial documentation, processing financial transactions, supporting budgeting and audit preparations, and maintaining updated and accurate financial records. The role will contribute to ensuring strong internal controls, compliance with donor and AU regulations, and timely financial reporting for AU-IBAR’s operations and projects.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Assist in recording and processing financial transactions in the accounting system.
Ensure timely preparation of payment vouchers and supporting documentation.
Maintain up-to-date financial records and filing systems.
Assist in bank reconciliations and reviewing account balances.
Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes.
Assist in monitoring budget performance and expenditures.
Help in the preparation of audit schedules and respond to audit queries.
Verify invoices, claims, and other financial documents for accuracy and compliance.
Ensure compliance with African Union financial regulations and procedures.
Provide administrative and logistical support to the Finance Unit as needed.
Perform any other financial duties assigned by the Senior Finance Officer.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
A recognized accounting qualification (e.g., CPA, ACCA) is an added advantage.
Experience:
A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in accounting or financial administration.
Previous experience working in a regional or international organization is desirable.
Familiarity with financial software systems and Microsoft Excel.
Key Competencies:
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold integrity in handling financial data.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of AU financial rules and regulations is an asset.
