Job Description
Position Title: 38 Counselors – Acholi Region
Implementing Partner: Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC)
Project: USAID Local Partner Health Services – Kigezi & Lango Activity
Project Overview
The USAID Local Partner Health Services – Kigezi & Lango Activity, led by JCRC, supports the delivery of integrated, high-quality HIV/AIDS and TB services in the Kigezi and Lango sub-regions. The project is expanding its support to the Ankole and Acholi regions, aiming to increase access to and utilization of comprehensive HIV and TB services.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Community Engagement Officer, the Counselor will provide holistic HIV and TB counseling services at facility and community levels. Services will be delivered in chronic care clinics, antenatal/mother-baby care points, and TB units.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Deliver quality counseling services to clients, their partners, and families, with a focus on HIV and TB care.
Support clients in disclosing their HIV status and promote index client testing for partners and family members.
Engage in client empowerment for self-reliance and succession planning.
Mobilize and educate communities on HIV prevention and care.
Conduct home-based HIV counseling/testing and TB screening.
Establish and support peer groups to strengthen client psychosocial support.
Participate in clinic work plan development and implementation.
Support client adherence through home visits and community outreach.
Provide health education to reduce client vulnerability to infections.
Promote awareness through facility-based and community sensitization activities.
Assist with implementation and reporting of Youth and Adolescent Peer Support (YAPS) activities.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counselling Psychology, Guidance, or related fields; OR a Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery with HIV counseling certification and experience.
At least one year of experience in HIV counseling, with exposure to both facility- and community-based care.
Additional short courses in HIV counseling are an added advantage.
Strong understanding of psychosocial issues affecting people living with HIV/TB.
Familiarity with care planning and adherence support strategies.
Ability to manage stress and maintain high levels of empathy, integrity, and confidentiality.
Motorcycle riding skills with a valid license are a strong advantage.
